Crohn’s Disease Q & A

What is Crohn’s disease?

Crohn’s disease is a type of chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation along any part of your digestive tract, from your mouth to your anus. However, the inflammation is most often found in the last portion of the small intestine, referred to as the ileum and the start of the colon. The inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease can penetrate deep into your digestive tissue and even to other organs.

Researchers aren’t certain what causes Crohn’s disease, but they theorize that a virus or bacteria may trigger your immune system to attack your digestive tissue. You may be at risk of developing this inflammatory bowel disease if it runs in your family.

What are the symptoms of Crohn’s disease?

Symptoms of Crohn’s disease may vary in type and severity depending on the portion of bowel affected, as well as the severity of the inflammation. Common symptoms of Crohn’s disease include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Bloody stool
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting

The symptoms may develop gradually over time, or they may come on quickly and unexpectedly.

You should contact 7 Hill Gastroenterology, LLC, if you’re experiencing any of the symptoms of Crohn’s disease for an evaluation and treatment plan.

How is Crohn’s disease diagnosed?

The gastroenterology specialist at 7 Hill Gastroenterology, LLC, performs a comprehensive examination when you come to the office with symptoms that may be indicative of Crohn’s disease. During your evaluation, your specialist reviews your symptoms, medical and family history, and performs a physical exam.

No single test can diagnose Crohn’s disease, and your specialist may request a series of tests to confirm or rule out a diagnosis, which may include:

  • Blood work
  • Stool test
  • MRI

You may also need a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy so your specialist can evaluate your digestive system and take tissue samples to assist in making a diagnosis.

How is Crohn’s disease treated?

Currently, there’s no cure for Crohn’s disease. Still, the specialists at 7 Hill Gastroenterology, LLC, can develop a treatment plan that minimizes the inflammation and flare-ups to keep your condition in remission. Your treatment plan may include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Steroids
  • Immunosuppressant medications
  • Biologic therapies

If your inflammation is severe and medication fails to promote healing, then surgery may be needed to remove the portion of the bowel affected by your Crohn’s disease.
